Michael Maier was a 17th-century alchemist and physician to the court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague. First published in 1617, Atalanta Fugiens is one of the finest alchemical books, unique in its own right. Michael Maier's work is richly illustrated with original prints by M. Merian. Each of the 50 emblems of Atalanta Fugiens consists of a motto, a print, and an epigram. H.M. E. de Jong relates the emblems to an additional 30 alchemical engravings from other prominent alchemical works. With reproductions of several hard-to-find foldouts of alchemical engravings, this book is a collector's edition.
